Gene Therapy
Gene therapy is a medical technique that modifies or replaces genes to treat or prevent disease. It works by introducing, removing, or altering genetic material within a person's cells to correct or compensate for faulty genes. This can be done using viral vectors, non-viral methods (such as lipid nanoparticles or electroporation), or gene-editing technologies like CRISPR.
How Gene Therapy Could Extend Lifespan:
Delaying or Preventing Age-Related Diseases
Metabolic: Modifying genes like fst or PGC-1a to enhance help with muscle and mitochondrial health.
Neuroprotection: Increasing expression of Klotho or BDNF to protect against neurodegeneration.
Cardiovascular Health: Enhancing nitric oxide production or increasing protection through Klotho.
Cellular Rejuvenation & Regeneration
Telomerase Activation: Reactivating TERT (telomerase reverse transcriptase) to maintain or extend telomere length, reducing cellular senescence.
Follistatin Overexpression: Blocking myostatin to maintain muscle mass and metabolic health.
NAD+ Boosting Genes: Upregulating pathways like NAMPT to support mitochondrial function and energy production.
Klotho: Gero protection.
Reducing Chronic Inflammation & Senescence
Senolytic Gene Therapies: Targeting and eliminating senescent cells to reduce inflammatory cytokine release.
Enhancing Autophagy: Overexpressing genes like TFEB to improve cellular cleanup mechanisms.
Metabolic and Mitochondrial Enhancements
AMPK Activation: Increasing AMPK signaling to enhance glucose metabolism and mitochondrial efficiency.
SIRT Gene Modulation: Upregulating SIRT1, SIRT3, and SIRT6 to mimic calorie restriction benefits.
